Choosing a Colour

Choosing a colour can be a surprisingly difficult activity. Almost every time you choose a colour off a colour card sample you are roaring with confidence from your decision but once you get home or even once you’ve applied the colour on the wall, it can often look completely different to what you had visioned.

This happens for a few reasons but the most common reason is probably lighting. When you first picked the colour at the store it was most likely under a bright fluorescent light, however when you finally see the colour in natural light or in the lighting in your home, it can look quite different. Warm, cosy, dull lighting that is often in homes often makes the colour look darker than the bright industrial lighting in hardware stores.

The best way to combat this problem is by purchasing a colour sample pot from your local Dulux trade centre or hardware store. You can then see exactly how the colour will appear in your home environment. Perhaps even get a few different colours while you are there, to allow you to pick the best one for your home environment.

You want to be 100% confident in your colour choice before purchasing all your paint and painting your home, and a sample pot will ensure this. If you like a certain sample but you would prefer it a little lighter, ask your painter to use half strength of the tinter rather than the full strength. This also applies if you would like to make the colour darker.
